1. In 1733, General James Oglethorpe officially declared Savannah as the capital of the new British colony of Georgia. Savannah remained the capital until 1785, when it was moved to Augusta.
2. In 1858, the Atlanta Municipal Cemetery was founded. Over the years, the cemetery has become the final resting place for many notable Georgians, including author Margaret Mitchell.
3. In 1944, the 1st Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the US Army's 101st Airborne Division, famously known as the "Screaming Eagles," captured the town of Carentan during the Normandy Invasion. Many of the soldiers in the unit were from Georgia.
4. In 1970, the Georgia State Senate approved the creation of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority. The Georgia World Congress Center is one of the largest convention centers in the world, hosting events such as the Atlanta International Auto Show and Dragon Con.
5. In 1996, a bomb exploded at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta during the Summer Olympics, killing one person and injuring over 100 others. The attack occurred on July 27, but May 11 was the birthday of Eric Rudolph, the man responsible for the attack, who would later be caught and sentenced to life in prison.
