1. In 1865, Union forces under the command of Major General Quincy A. Gillmore arrived in Charleston, officially ending the Civil War in South Carolina. The city had been surrendered to Union forces in February of that year.
2. In 1923, the University of South Carolina dedicated its new campus in Columbia. The university had previously been located in another part of the city, but the new campus allowed for more growth and expansion.
3. In 1959, astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr. was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. Duke would go on to become the tenth person to walk on the moon during the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.
4. In 1996, Hurricane Bertha made landfall in South Carolina, causing significant damage to coastal areas of the state. Despite being only a Category 2 storm, Bertha caused over $250 million in damage.
5. In 2014, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley signed into law the "Illegal Immigration and Reform Act", which required all employers to use the federal E-Verify system to check the immigration status of their employees. The law faced criticism from some who argued that it would unfairly harm immigrants and their families.
