1. In 1780, the Battle of Connecticut Farms took place in present-day Union Township. British forces successfully overran the American forces and destroyed several houses and farms in the area.

2. In 1903, the Highland Park Tract was established as a residential community in the city of Highland Park. The development was one of the first planned communities in the country and was designed to be accessible by trolley.

3. In 1932, the Morro Castle, a luxury ocean liner, caught fire off the coast of Asbury Park. Over 130 people died in the disaster, which was caused by a combination of a fire and a navigational error.

4. In 1967, New Jersey Governor Richard J. Hughes signed into law the New Jersey Casino Control Act, which legalized casino gambling in Atlantic City. The first casino, Resorts Atlantic City, opened in 1978.

5. In 2018, a school bus collision occurred on May 17, 2018, on Interstate 80 in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. A dump truck collided with a school bus, killing one teacher and one student while injuring over forty others.
