1. In 1787, English navigator Captain William Brown encounters the Hawaiian Islands and charts the coasts of Kaua`i and Ni`ihau.
2. On May 14, 1874, the first Chinese immigrants arrived in Hawaii. This date is now known as "Chinese Arrival Day" and is officially recognized as a state holiday.
3. In 1927, the National Park Service creates the active volcano park on the island of Hawai`i, which is now known as the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park.
4. May 14, 1971, marks the opening of the first modern shopping center in Hawaii, the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu. This mall is still one of the largest in the United States today.
5. On May 14, 1997, Princess Victoria Kawekiu Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kaiulani Cleghorn of Hawai`i was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY, for her courageous and inspiring leadership during the late 19th century.
