1. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León landed in what is now St. Augustine, becoming the first European to set foot in what is now the United States. He named the area "La Florida," meaning "full of flowers."

2. In 1903, one of the deadliest tornadoes in Florida history struck Gainesville, killing 39 people and injuring hundreds more. The tornado was estimated to be an F4 on the Fujita scale, with winds in excess of 200 miles per hour.

3. In 1946, the Tampa Bay Junior College (now known as Hillsborough Community College) was established. It was the first public community college in Florida and one of the first in the entire country.

4. In 1968, the Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo 7 into space was tested for the first time at the Kennedy Space Center. This was the first test of the rocket that would eventually carry astronauts to the moon.

5. In 1983, the Miami Dolphins selected Dan Marino with the 27th overall pick in the NFL draft. Marino went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Dolphins, leading the team to five AFC championships and a Super Bowl appearance.
