1. On May 22, 1868, Fort D. A. Russell was established near present-day Cheyenne, Wyoming. Named after Union Brigadier General David Allen Russell who died in the Civil War, the fort served as a military outpost during the Indian Wars and in World War I and II. Today, it is known as Warren Air Force Base and is home to the 90th Missile Wing.

2. In 1906, the state of Wyoming established the first state park in the United States. Located in Hot Springs County, Hot Springs State Park is home to the world’s largest single mineral hot spring and features hiking trails, picnic areas, and a bathhouse.

3. May 22, 1915, saw the opening of the Hulett Flour Mill, in Hulett, Wyoming. At the time, it was the largest flour mill in the state and helped to boost the local economy.

4. On May 22, 1925, a historic event occurred in Rock Springs, Wyoming, as the first long-distance television broadcast took place. The broadcast, which was transmitted from New York City, was received by a small group of people in the city.

5. In 1979, May 22 saw the dedication of Devils Tower National Monument in northeastern Wyoming. The towering rock formation is sacred to many Native American tribes and is a popular destination for rock climbing and hiking.
