1. On May 23, 1907, the Alabama Legislature declared Birmingham as the state's new capital. The location was selected to encourage economic development in the area, and the Capitol building was completed in 1926.

2. In 1934, the famous outlaw Bonnie Parker, of the duo Bonnie and Clyde, was captured in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. She had ties to the Birmingham area, as her family had moved there during the Great Depression.

3. On May 23, 1942, the USS Alabama battleship was commissioned into the United States Navy. The ship served in both World War II and the Korean War, and is now a popular tourist attraction in Mobile, Alabama.

4. The town of Jemison, Alabama was incorporated on May 23, 1907. The town is known for its peach production, and hosts an annual Peach Festival in June.

5. In 2003, the Alabama Legislature designated May 23 as "Drum Corps International Day" in honor of the many competitive drum and bugle corps from around the country that perform in Birmingham each year as part of their summer tours.
