Although born in Massachusetts, JFK has a special place in the heart of West Virginians due to his speech during the 1960 presidential election where he spoke about the poverty and resiliency of the people of West Virginia.

2. The Great Flood of 1889 - On May 25, 1889, the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, broke causing a flood that killed over 2,200 people in Pennsylvania. The floodwaters also affected West Virginia causing destruction and loss of life. 55 of the fatalities were from West Virginia.

3. West Virginia becomes a state - On May 25, 1863, West Virginia officially became the 35th state of the United States. It was born out of the Civil War with the western counties of Virginia breaking away from the Confederacy and forming their own state.
