1. In 1964, the Minnesota Twins played their first game at the then brand new Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington. They beat the New York Yankees 5-3 in front of 45,000 fans.

2. The “Great Mill Disaster” happened on May 26, 1878, in Minneapolis. A spark from a flour dust explosion caused the collapse of the Washburn A Mill’s eight-story structure, leading to the deaths of 18 workers.

3. The Wizard of Oz first premiered in St. Paul on May 26, 1939, at the Orpheum Theatre. It was one of the very first cities to host the new film before it was shown nationwide on August 25, 1939.

4. On May 26, 1858, Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state in the U.S. and the first in the West after Louisiana.

5. Minnesota’s first school for the deaf was established on May 26, 1863. Though the school had to close due to funding issues a few years later, it paved the way for other schools for people with disabilities in the state.
