1. In 1833, the first permanent White settlers arrived in Milwaukee. Three men from New York named Juneau, Kilbourn, and Martin, settled at the mouth of the Milwaukee River and founded the future city.
2. On May 26, 1879, the first intercollegiate football game in Wisconsin was played in Beloit. The University of Wisconsin-Madison played against Milton College and won the game 9-0.
3. In 1917, the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team played their first game at the newly-built Borchert Field stadium. The Brewers played in the American Association and were a popular team in Milwaukee until the Braves moved to the city in 1953.
4. The Wisconsin State Legislature officially designated the state tree on May 26, 1949. The sugar maple, known for its beautiful fall colors and maple syrup production, was chosen as the state tree.
5. On May 26, 2011, the Milwaukee art community celebrated the grand opening of the Milwaukee Art Museum's new addition, the Quadracci Pavilion. The addition was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and features a moveable sunscreen that opens and closes like bird wings.
