1. In 1813, the Battle of Craney Island occurred during the War of 1812. The British attempted to attack the American fortifications on Craney Island in the Chesapeake Bay, but were repelled by American forces.
2. In 1927, the Ford Motor Company's River Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan ceased production for five months due to a labor strike. This had a major impact on the economy of nearby Baltimore, where the plant's suppliers were located.
3. In 1941, the United States Army activated the 29th Infantry Division, also known as the "Blue and Gray Division," at Camp Meade in Maryland. The division would go on to take part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy during World War II.
4. In 1967, the USS Liberty, a United States Navy technical research ship, was attacked and damaged by Israeli jets and torpedo boats off the coast of Sinai, Egypt during the Six-Day War. Thirty-four American sailors were killed and 171 were injured in the incident.
5. In 2011, the Maryland General Assembly passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the state. This made Maryland the 8th state in the United States to recognize same-sex marriage. The law went into effect on January 1, 2013.
