3. In 1941, the United States Army activated the 29th Infantry Division, also known as the "Blue and Gray Division," at Camp Meade in Maryland. The division would go on to take part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy during World War II.
4. In 1967, the USS Liberty, a United States Navy technical research ship, was attacked and damaged by Israeli jets and torpedo boats off the coast of Sinai, Egypt during the Six-Day War. Thirty-four American sailors were killed and 171 were injured in the incident.
5. In 2011, the Maryland General Assembly passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the state. This made Maryland the 8th state in the United States to recognize same-sex marriage. The law went into effect on January 1, 2013.
