1. On May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge opened in San Francisco, California. While this didn't happen in Nebraska, it's worth noting that Nebraska played a key role in the construction of the bridge. The wire cables used in the bridge's construction were made by the John A. Roebling's Sons Company in Trenton, New Jersey, but the wire was actually manufactured at the Pacific Steel Company in Omaha, Nebraska.

2. On May 27, 1968, Nebraska State Patrolman Marvin Zeilinger was shot and killed during a traffic stop near North Platte, Nebraska. The shooter, Roy Allen Stewart, was a member of the radical left-wing group the Weather Underground. Stewart was eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison, but he escaped in 1981 and is still on the FBI's Most Wanted list.

3. On May 27, 1910, Omaha hosted the world premiere of the opera "Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi. The performance was staged at the Brandeis Theater and featured acclaimed Italian soprano Maria Barrientos in the title role.

4. On May 27, 1891, the first high school in Lincoln, Nebraska, opened its doors. The school, known as Lincoln High School, was housed in a small brick building near the state capitol. Today, Lincoln High School is one of the largest and most prestigious high schools in the state.

5. On May 27, 1995, the Nebraska Cornhuskers won their fifth NCAA Division I National Championship in football by defeating the Florida Gators 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl.
