1. On May 28, 1818, the Maryland Bible Society was founded in Baltimore, with the goal of distributing Bibles and promoting Bible literacy throughout the state. Today, the organization continues to promote the value of the Bible in homes, schools, and churches across Maryland.
2. In 1936, the Memorial Stadium in Baltimore opened on May 28th, hosting its first game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Rochester Red Wings. The stadium served as the home of the Baltimore Colts and Baltimore Orioles until its closure in 1997.
3. On May 28, 1950, the first Memorial Day parade was held in Bel Air, Maryland, a tradition which continues to this day. The event honors veterans and marks the unofficial start of summer in Harford County.
4. In 1983, the iconic Captain Crunch cereal mascot, Horatio Magellan Crunch, made an appearance at the Maryland Renaissance Festival on May 28th. The festival celebrates the Elizabethan era with period costumes, crafts, and entertainment.
5. On May 28, 2011, the Preakness Stakes horse race was held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The event is the second leg of the Triple Crown and draws thousands of visitors to Maryland each year. California Chrome won the race, going on to win the Belmont Stakes and complete the Triple Crown.
