1. In 1844, the Oregon Territory was established by the United States Congress, which encompassed present-day Oregon, Washington, and parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. This decision was controversial at the time and sparked a border dispute with the British-owned Hudson's Bay Company, which had a large presence in the region.

2. On May 28, 1896, the first automobile race in Oregon was held in Portland. The race was organized by the Oregon Bicycle Club and consisted of a 12-mile course that started and ended at the Multnomah County Courthouse. The winner of the race was J.W. Tuffley, who drove a Duryea motorcar.

3. In 1929, the Oregon State Capitol was dedicated in Salem. The building took three years to construct and features a distinctive Art Deco design. The Capitol is home to the offices of the Governor of Oregon and the Oregon State Legislature.

4. On May 28, 1942, the U.S. Army established Camp White near White City, Oregon. The camp was used as a training facility for soldiers during World War II and was home to over 60,000 troops during its operation. Today, the site is home to the White City Industrial Park.

5. In 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, causing widespread destruction in Oregon and Washington. The eruption was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history, killing 57 people and causing over $1 billion in damage. The eruption also had long-lasting environmental impacts, including the destruction of hundreds of miles of forest habitat and the creation of a new crater on the top of the mountain.
