1. In 1733, the colony of Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe and a group of English settlers. Georgia was the last of the thirteen original colonies to be founded.
2. On May 29, 1865, the Union Army landed in Georgia, officially ending the Civil War in the state. This marked the end of the longest and bloodiest conflict in American history.
3. In 1914, construction began on Stone Mountain, located outside of Atlanta. The carving of Confederate leaders Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis into the mountain would eventually become one of the largest bas-relief sculptures in the world.
4. On May 29, 1947, John F. Kennedy gave his first major speech as a member of Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. He spoke about the importance of fighting against communism and urged Americans to be vigilant in defending their freedoms.
5. In 2016, the Atlanta Braves played their final game at Turner Field before moving to a new stadium in Cobb County. The stadium had been the home of the Braves since 1997 and was a fixture of the Atlanta sports scene for nearly two decades.
