1. In 1862, the Nevada Territory was established by the U.S. Congress. The territory was created from the western portion of the Utah Territory.

2. May 29, 1900, marked the opening of the first auto race in Nevada. The race took place in Reno and was won by driver Fred C. Balzar.

3. On May 29, 1933, Nevada legalized gambling. The state became the first in the U.S. to legalize most forms of gambling, which helped to boost its economy during the Great Depression.

4. The Hoover Dam, one of the largest man-made structures in the world, was completed on May 29, 1935. The dam was constructed on the Colorado River near the Nevada-Arizona border and was named after President Herbert Hoover.

5. In 1988, the Mirage hotel and casino opened on the Las Vegas Strip. The property was developed by legendary casino tycoon Steve Wynn and helped to usher in a new era of luxury resorts in Las Vegas. The Mirage was also home to the iconic Siegfried & Roy show, featuring white tigers and other exotic animals.
