1. In 1783, a treaty was signed between the United States and Great Britain that officially ended the American Revolutionary War. This treaty, known as the Treaty of Paris, recognized the independence of the United States and established the boundaries of the new nation.

2. In 1865, the steamship Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee, killing over 1,800 people. Many of the passengers on board were recently released Union soldiers who were returning home after the end of the Civil War, and the tragedy remains one of the deadliest maritime disasters in U.S. history.

3. In 1921, the South Carolina state legislature passed a law allowing women to serve on juries. This made South Carolina the first state in the country to grant women this right, and it was a significant achievement in the struggle for women's suffrage and equal rights.

4. In 1943, the Liberty Ship SS William Moultrie was launched from the Savannah Shipyard in Georgia. The ship was named after a prominent South Carolinian and Revolutionary War hero, and it was one of over 2,700 Liberty Ships built during World War II to transport troops and supplies across the Atlantic.

5. In 1971, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that the state's death penalty was unconstitutional. The ruling was based on the fact that the state's law at the time allowed for the death penalty to be imposed in cases where the decision was made by a jury that was not unanimous, which the court found to be a violation of the Eighth Amendment's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment.
