1. In 1845, Iowa City was officially named as the capital of the state of Iowa.

2. On May 30, 1868, the first Memorial Day service in Iowa was held in Cedar Rapids. It was organized by the Women's Relief Corps, and over 1,000 people attended the event.

3. In 1922, fire destroyed the historic Ladora Bank in Ladora, Iowa. The bank was designed by famous architect Louis Sullivan, and was one of his few remaining buildings in the Midwest.

4. In 1953, the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright visited Mason City, Iowa to work on the design of a hotel. The resulting building, the Park Inn Hotel, is the last remaining hotel in the world designed by Wright.

5. On May 30, 1995, the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates was opened in Des Moines, Iowa. The building is dedicated to honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of food and agriculture, and is home to the World Food Prize Foundation.
