1. In 1911, Mount Katmai, a volcano in Alaska, erupted. The ash cloud produced by the eruption was one of the largest in history, reaching as high as 100,000 feet, and causing darkness in some areas for up to three days.

2. On May 31, 1929, a powerful earthquake struck southeastern Alaska, causing widespread damage and resulting in the deaths of 14 people. The quake, which had a magnitude of 7.2, was one of the most significant seismic events to occur in the state during the 1920s.

4. On May 31, 1990, the body of a small dinosaur known as Troodon was discovered in the Cantwell Formation in Alaska. Troodon, which lived during the Late Cretaceous period, was one of the most intelligent dinosaurs known to science, with a brain-to-body mass ratio comparable to that of modern birds.

5. In 2017, the Alaskan city of North Pole (not to be confused with the actual North Pole) declared itself a sanctuary city for the unborn. The city council passed an ordinance stating that no abortion providers or clinics would be allowed to operate within city limits, a move that sparked controversy and legal challenges.
