1. Rhode Island became the 13th state to ratify the United States Constitution on May 4, 1790. The state had previously held out on ratifying the document because of concerns over individual rights, but eventually came around to joining the new country's governing document.

The fort, located on an island in Newport Harbor, had been used by the British to control access to the harbor. 5. May 4, 1956, saw the opening of the Pell Bridge, which connects Newport and Jamestown. The bridge, named after longtime Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell, spans over two miles and allows for easy access between the two communities. The bridge is also a popular tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the Narragansett Bay.
