1) The first recorded European settlement in Rhode Island occurred on May 5, 1636 when Roger Williams and a small group of followers founded the city of Providence.

2) On May 5, 1864, the Rhode Island National Guard was activated to serve in the Civil War. They were sent to Virginia to fight in the Battle of Cold Harbor.

3) On May 5, 1899, Rhode Island became the first state to pass a law prohibiting the sale of cigarettes to minors under the age of 16.

4) May 5, 1979, marked the opening of the Providence Place Mall, the largest shopping mall in Rhode Island. With over 170 stores, it features a movie theater and restaurants.

5) In 2012, May 5 was declared "Rhode Island Independent Bookstore Day" by Governor Lincoln Chafee. The day was meant to promote local literary businesses and encourage residents to support small bookstores in the area.
