1. In 1864, the Utah War officially ended on May 5th when Brigham Young signed a peace treaty with the U.S. government. The conflict had begun years earlier when Young, the leader of the Mormon Church, openly defied federal authority and established a theocratic government in Utah.

2. The first transcontinental airmail flight landed in Salt Lake City on May 5, 1920. Piloted by Jack Knight, the flight traveled from New York to San Francisco, stopping at various cities along the way to deliver mail.

3. On May 5, 1933, the 5th Avenue Theater in Salt Lake City opened its doors for the first time. Designed by renowned architect John Eberson, the theater quickly became a hotspot for Utah’s social elite, regularly hosting musical performances, plays, and movie premieres.

4. May 5, 1983, marks the day that the Utah Jazz made Gary Grant their first-round pick in the NBA draft. Although Grant would play for several teams throughout his career, he spent his rookie season with the Jazz, averaging 4.4 points and 3.4 assists per game.

5. In 2018, May 5th was designated as “Utah Public Lands Day” by Governor Gary Herbert. The holiday was created to celebrate the state’s diverse and beautiful public lands, including national parks, national forests, and wilderness areas.
