1. In 1792, British sailor Captain George Vancouver became the first European to visit the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Vancouver, who was on a mapping expedition, traded iron tools and other items with the local people in exchange for food and water.

2. On May 7, 1896, a devastating earthquake struck the Hawaiian island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.9, caused widespread damage and triggered a tsunami that killed at least 31 people.

3. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh, the famous American aviator, made a stop in Honolulu as part of his historic solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh's visit to Hawaii was greeted with much fanfare, and he was honored with a parade and other celebrations.

4. On May 7, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The statehood of Hawaii was the result of decades of political and social activism by the people of Hawaii, who sought recognition as a sovereign nation.
