1. On May 8, 1792, Vermont became the 14th state to join the United States. After years of negotiation and disputes with neighboring New York, Vermont finally achieved statehood and established its own independent government.

2. In 1830, on May 8th, the first steamboat arrived in Burlington, Vermont, marking a new era of transportation and commerce for the state. The steamboat, called the Phoenix, could carry up to 130 passengers and was used to transport goods and people up and down Lake Champlain.

3. On May 8, 1877, Barre, Vermont, was incorporated as a city. Barre is known for its granite quarries and stone-cutting industry, which first began in the 19th century. Today, Barre's granite is used to make everything from headstones to countertops.

4. The Vermont State Capitol building in Montpelier was dedicated on May 8, 1930. The building, which took almost 20 years to complete, is made of Vermont granite and features a distinctive gold-leaf dome. It is home to the Vermont General Assembly and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor.

5. On May 8, 1988, Vermont's first female governor, Madeleine Kunin, was inaugurated. Kunin, who served three terms as governor, was known for her advocacy for women's rights and environmental protection. She also oversaw the implementation of statewide education reform and helped to establish the Vermont Economic Development Authority.
