1) On November 1, 1863, West Virginia officially became the 35th state to join the United States. The state was formed during the Civil War after several counties in Virginia voted to secede and remain loyal to the Union.

2) On November 1, 1968, the world's largest suspension bridge at the time, the New River Gorge Bridge, was completed in Fayette County. The bridge spans 3,030 feet and is one of the most popular attractions in the state.

3) In 1986, the West Virginia University football team defeated the University of Pittsburgh on November 1 to clinch their first-ever undefeated regular season. The Mountaineers finished the season with a 11-0 record but were later defeated in the Fiesta Bowl.

4) On November 1, 1922, Wheeling native John Joseph O'Connor was ordained as a Catholic priest. O'Connor would later become Archbishop of New York and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church, known for his advocacy of social justice and interfaith relations.

5) On November 1, 1950, the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs opened its doors to the public after an extensive renovation. The renowned hotel has hosted numerous presidents, celebrities, and international heads of state over the years and is a cultural landmark in the state.
