1. In 1865, the Steamship Maple Leaf sank off the coast of Mandarin, Florida. The ship was carrying Union soldiers and supplies when it was hit by a Confederate torpedo. Today, the Maple Leaf is considered one of Florida's most important Civil War shipwrecks and a popular dive site.

2. On November 10, 1921, the Florida East Coast Railway opened the Overseas Railroad, connecting the Florida Keys to the mainland. The railroad was considered an engineering marvel, spanning 113 miles over the ocean and through swamps and marshes. However, it was abandoned in 1935 after a hurricane destroyed much of the track.

3. In 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew members. One of the crew members aboard the ship was from Florida: Third Mate Michael E. Armagost of Jacksonville.

4. On November 10, 1989, a tornado outbreak hit Florida, causing significant damage and claiming the lives of 13 people. The tornadoes were part of a larger outbreak that affected much of the southeastern United States.

5. In 2018, Democrat Donna Shalala won the U.S. House race in Florida's 27th congressional district, defeating Republican Maria Elvira Salazar. Shalala's victory marked a significant upset in a traditionally Republican-leaning district and gave Democrats a foothold in South Florida.
