1) On November 12, 1896, the University of Wyoming was founded. It was the first institution of higher education in the state and initially offered only undergraduate degrees.

2) In 1929, on November 12, the iconic Wyoming state flag was adopted. The flag features a white buffalo on a blue field and was designed by a local resident, Verna Keays.

3) On November 12, 1940, a massive blizzard hit Wyoming and several other Midwestern states. Known as the Armistice Day Blizzard, it caused widespread damage and hundreds of deaths.

4) In 1964, on November 12, the Teton Dam in southeastern Idaho failed, sending a massive amount of water into Wyoming's Snake River. The flood caused substantial damage to nearby towns and killed eleven people.

5) On November 12, 1996, a group of protestors gathered outside the Wyoming State Capitol to advocate for hate crime legislation in response to the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student. Shepard's death sparked national attention and eventually led to the passage of federal hate crime laws.
