2. In 1951, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born and raised in Kansas, addressed the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. during his presidency. In his speech, he discussed the challenges facing the world at the time, including the Korean War and the threat of Communism.
3. On November 13, 1986, a massive fire broke out at the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, causing extensive damage to the facility. The fire, which was ignited by a group of inmates, resulted in the death of one inmate and the injuries of several others.
4. In 1989, Dennis Rader, also known as the BTK Killer, carried out his fourth known murder in Park City, Kansas. Rader would go on to commit several more murders before finally being caught and convicted in 2005.
