1) In 1956, the Michigan State Spartans defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a legendary football game known as "The Game of the Century." This victory helped secure MSU's spot as the number one team in the nation.

2) On November 13, 1976, the Edmund Fitzgerald, a massive ore carrier, sank in Lake Superior during a raging storm. All 29 crew members perished in the tragedy, and the event inspired a popular song by Gordon Lightfoot.
