1. In 1889, South Dakota became a state on November 2, but November 13 was the day that it officially entered the Union as the 40th state. This day is celebrated annually as Statehood Day.

2. On November 13, 1965, a record-breaking snowstorm hit South Dakota, dumping 30 inches of snow in some areas and causing widespread damage and power outages. The storm is known as the Blizzard of 1965 and is still remembered by many South Dakotans.

3. On November 13, 1918, just a few days after the end of World War I, the first American Legion Post in the country was founded in Paris, France. The Legion has since become the largest veterans' organization in the United States, and many South Dakotans are active members.

4. November 13, 1894, was the birthdate of South Dakota's first governor, Peter Norbeck. Norbeck served as governor from 1917 to 1921 and was instrumental in the development of Mount Rushmore and the state's highway system.

5. On November 13, 1864, a group of soldiers led by General Patrick Connor attacked a peaceful village of Cheyenne and Arapaho people in present-day Colorado, killing around 200 people (mostly women, children, and the elderly) in what is known as the Sand Creek Massacre. Although the massacre did not take place in South Dakota, many Cheyenne and Arapaho people eventually settled in the state, and their descendants continue to live in South Dakota today.
