1. In 1863, West Virginia became the 35th state of the United States. The state was created as a result of the Civil War and is the only state to have formed by seceding from a Confederate state.

2. On November 14, 1970, a Southern Airways DC-9 crashed into a hillside near Huntington, West Virginia, killing all 75 passengers and crew on board. The crash remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in West Virginia history.

3. On November 14, 1968, the Buckhannon-Upshur High School football team won the West Virginia Class AA state championship. The team went undefeated that season and is still remembered as one of the state's all-time great football teams.

4. In 1985, William H. Parham was elected as the first African American mayor of Bluefield, West Virginia. He served three terms as mayor and was instrumental in bringing economic development and revitalization to the city.

5. On November 14, 1972, the Edmunds-Tucker Act was repealed by Congress. The act had been passed in 1887 and had abolished polygamy in the Utah Territory, which at the time included what is now West Virginia. The repeal of the act helped to restore full civil rights to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
