1. On November 15, 1820, Maine became the 23rd state in the United States. The state was previously part of Massachusetts but separated in order to gain its own statehood.
2. The famous writer E.B. White was born on November 15, 1899, in Mount Vernon, New York. White spent many summers in Maine and eventually moved there permanently. He is best known for his children's book, "Charlotte's Web."
3. The deadliest shipwreck in Maine's history occurred on November 15, 1898. The steamship "Portland" sank in a terrible storm off the coast of Cape Cod, killing all 192 passengers and crew members aboard.
4. On November 15, 1969, the first Maine State Police officers graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Today, the academy is still in operation and trains law enforcement officers from across the state.
5. The Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory opened to the public on November 15, 2006. The cable-stayed bridge spans the Penobscot River and connects Verona Island to Prospect, Maine. The observatory at the top of the bridge offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.
