2. On November 16, 1935, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument was established in western Colorado. The deep, narrow canyon, which is up to 2,700 feet deep in places, is known for its spectacular scenery and challenging hiking and climbing opportunities.

3. In 1974, skier Dick Dorworth set a new world speed skiing record of 124.9 miles per hour at the Vail Ski Resort in Colorado. Dorworth's record stood for more than a decade and helped to popularize the sport of speed skiing around the world.

4. On November 16, 1982, Colorado became the first state in the US to vote down a constitutional amendment that would have banned gay and lesbian individuals from teaching in public schools. The amendment, known as Amendment 2, was later struck down as unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court.

5. In 1992, the University of Colorado at Boulder's football team won a thrilling 37-34 victory over the University of Nebraska in what is known as the "Miracle at Michigan." The game, which was played at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is considered one of the greatest upsets in college football history.
