1. On November 17, 1869, the University of Wisconsin-Madison opened its doors for the first time. The university was originally known as the Wisconsin State University and had an initial enrollment of 17 students.

2. On November 17, 1878, the Oshkosh Fire Department was established. The department has since grown into a full-service fire and emergency medical services provider for the city of Oshkosh and the surrounding area.

3. On November 17, 1906, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music was founded in Milwaukee. Today, the institution is known as the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Arts and provides music, art, theater, and dance instruction for students of all ages.

4. On November 17, 1987, a record-breaking snowstorm hit Wisconsin, dumping up to 30 inches of snow in some areas. The storm caused widespread power outages, closed schools and businesses, and disrupted travel for several days.

5. On November 17, 2000, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre became the first player in NFL history to throw for 3,000 yards in eight consecutive seasons. Favre went on to have a Hall of Fame career, leading the Packers to a Super Bowl victory in 1997.
