1. In 1863, Union forces led by Major General Ambrose Burnside captured Plymouth, North Carolina during the Civil War. The town remained under Union control for the rest of the war.

2. On November 19, 1984, The University of North Carolina basketball team defeated the University of Kentucky Wildcats 77-72 in their first meeting since the 1978 National Championship Game.

3. In 1718, Blackbeard the Pirate was killed in a battle off the coast of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The infamous pirate had terrorized the Atlantic coast for several years prior to his death.

4. On this day in 1994, North Carolina State beat the University of North Carolina in a football game that is now known as the "Miracle at Carter-Finley." North Carolina State had been down 35-0 in the first half but came back to win 41-35.

5. In 2005, University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams won his 500th career game as a college basketball coach in a victory over Gardner-Webb. Williams has since won multiple national championships with the Tar Heels.
