1. In 1935, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Butte announced plans to build a new smelter in Great Falls that would be one of the largest in the world. The new smelter helped make Montana one of the leading copper producers in the world during this period.

2. On November 20, 1945, Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress, gave a speech in Missoula calling for the establishment of the United Nations. Rankin was a lifelong pacifist and feminist who became well-known for her opposition to war and support for women's rights.

3. In 1963, a group of environmentalists led by Terry Badlands launched a campaign to preserve the Badlands wilderness in central Montana. The campaign eventually led to the establishment of the Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area, which protects more than 44,000 acres of pristine prairie and badlands habitat.

4. On November 20, 1985, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service announced that it was considering listing the grizzly bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The grizzly bear was once found throughout much of western North America, but its habitat has been greatly reduced by human development, hunting, and other factors.

5. In 2015, Montana Governor Steve Bullock declared November 20 as "Transgender Day of Remembrance" in recognition of the discrimination and violence faced by transgender people. The declaration was intended to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the transgender community and to honor the lives of those who have been lost to hate crimes and other forms of violence.
