1. On November 23, 1786, the first newspaper published in Connecticut, called the Connecticut Courant, printed its first issue. It was founded by Thomas Green and was also known as the Hartford Courant.

2. In 1953, the first section of the Connecticut Turnpike opened on November 23rd. The toll road, also known as Interstate 95, connected Greenwich and Milford and would eventually become a major transportation route along the East Coast.

3. On November 23, 1971, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation was formally recognized by the state of Connecticut. This recognition gave the tribe certain rights and privileges, including the ability to conduct gambling operations which would eventually lead to the opening of Foxwoods Resort Casino, one of the largest casinos in the world.

4. On November 23, 1985, the University of Connecticut men's basketball team played its first game at the Hartford Civic Center (now known as the XL Center), defeating Boston University 72-56. The team has since won four national championships and is considered one of the most successful programs in college basketball.

5. On November 23, 2004, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to marry under the state constitution, making Connecticut the second state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage. The ruling would go into effect in 2008, six years before the US Supreme Court would make same-sex marriage legal across the entire country.
