1. In 1996, a massive winter storm struck Nevada, causing widespread power outages and closing several major highways. The storm dumped over two feet of snow in some parts of the state and resulted in one of the largest blackouts in Nevada history.

2. On November 23, 1910, boxer Jack Johnson successfully defended his heavyweight title against Jim Jeffries in Reno. The fight, dubbed the "Fight of the Century," was significant because Jeffries had come out of retirement to try to defeat Johnson, who was the first African American heavyweight champion.

3. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation declaring Nevada a state. This happened on October 31, but November 23 is celebrated as statehood day in Nevada.

4. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas was founded on November 23, 1957. Originally known as Nevada Southern University, the school was created to provide higher education opportunities to the growing population in the southern part of the state.

5. On November 23, 1986, professional poker player Phil Hellmuth Jr. won his first World Series of Poker bracelet. Over the course of his career, Hellmuth has won a total of 15 WSOP bracelets, making him one of the most successful players in the history of the game.
