1. On November 23, 1863, West Virginia became the only state to be admitted to the Union during the American Civil War. This was a significant moment for the new state, which had been formed out of the western counties of Virginia that refused to secede from the United States.

2. In 1903, the town of Wheeling, West Virginia became home to the first statewide veterans hospital in the United States. The facility, originally known as the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane, was renamed the Veterans Administration Hospital in 1930 and is now known as the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center.

On November 23, 1927, Aviator Charles Lindbergh visited Charleston, West Virginia as part of his "Whirlwind Tour" of the United States following his historic solo flight across the Atlantic earlier that year. Lindbergh was greeted by thousands of enthusiastic West Virginians who had gathered to see him and his famous airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis.

4. In 1973, the Marshall University football team was involved in a tragic plane crash on November 14 that killed all 75 passengers and crew members on board. On November 23, the university held a public memorial service at the Charleston Civic Center to honor the victims and begin the process of healing and rebuilding.

5. On November 23, 2002, West Virginia native Brad Paisley released his third studio album, "Mud on the Tires." The album was a commercial and critical success, reaching number one on the Billboard country charts and featuring hit singles such as "Celebrity" and "Whiskey Lullaby." Paisley, who was born in Glen Dale, West Virginia, is now one of the most successful country artists of all time.
