1. In 1863, Governor Joseph A. Gilmore issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation, making November 24 a day of thanksgiving and prayer in New Hampshire.

2. In 1900, the first New Hampshire Thanksgiving football game was played between Dover High School and Somersworth High School in Great Falls. Dover won the game 64-0.

3. In 1935, the New Hampshire State House was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The State House was built in 1816 and is one of the oldest state capitol buildings in the country.

4. In 1950, the first day of trout fishing season opened in New Hampshire. The season runs from April through October, and many anglers consider the opening day to be a holiday.

5. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy visited New Hampshire to dedicate the new Mount Washington Observatory. The observatory is located on the summit of Mount Washington and is a center for weather research and education.
