1. In 1881, the notorious outlaw known as "Big Nose" George Parrott was lynched in Rawlins, Wyoming. He was held in the Carbon County Jail on charges of robbery and attempted murder. A vigilante mob broke into the jail and hanged him from a telegraph pole.

2. In 1909, Wyoming Governor Bryant Butler Brooks declared martial law in the town of Rock Springs. The United Mine Workers of America had called a strike in the coal mines, and tensions between strikers and mine owners had escalated into violence. The National Guard was called in to restore order.

3. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law, which protected millions of acres of public land across the country. One of the first areas to be designated as wilderness under the act was the Bridger Wilderness in Wyoming, which encompasses over 400,000 acres of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

4. In 1978, the Teton Dam in eastern Idaho failed, triggering a catastrophic flood that swept down the Snake River into Wyoming. The flood caused extensive damage to homes, farms, and roads along the river. It remains one of the worst dam failures in U.S. history.

5. In 2005, a teenager named Steven Truscott was exonerated in the 1959 murder of his classmate in Canada. Truscott had been sentenced to death at age 14 and spent ten years on death row before his sentence was commuted to life in prison. He moved to Wyoming in the 1980s and lived there until his exoneration.
