1. In 1867, the University of Wyoming was founded as the first institution of higher education in the state. Today, it is a major public research university and part of the prestigious Land Grant University system.

2. In 1899, the United States Geological Survey established its first field office in Lander, Wyoming. The office played a critical role in mapping and exploring the state's abundant natural resources, including coal, oil, and minerals.

3. In 1922, Wyoming became the first state to elect a female governor, when Nellie Tayloe Ross was chosen to succeed her late husband. Ross went on to serve two terms and later became the first woman to head the United States Mint.

4. In 1948, Dr. John Otto was elected as the first African-American member of the Wyoming State legislature. He went on to serve three terms and was a prominent advocate for civil rights and social justice.

5. In 1979, a massive blizzard struck southeastern Wyoming, bringing record snowfall and winds up to 80 miles per hour. The storm caused widespread damage and loss of life, and is still remembered as one of the most severe weather events in state history.
