1. In 1908, the Model T automobile was introduced to the public at the Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit. This revolutionary vehicle was designed by Henry Ford and went on to become an American icon.

2. On November 3, 1964, Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment that abolished capital punishment in the state. Michigan was the first state to do so by popular vote.

3. In 2008, Barack Obama made history by becoming the first African-American to be elected President of the United States. Michigan played a key role in his victory, as he won the state by a margin of 16 points.

4. The University of Michigan football program has a long and storied history, and November 3 has been a significant date for the Wolverines. In 1979, Michigan defeated Indiana 27-21 in a game that saw quarterback John Wangler throw for a school-record 349 yards. And in 2012, the Wolverines beat Minnesota 35-13 to win the Little Brown Jug for the 22nd time in 23 years.

5. In 1975, a group of Native American activists occupied the abandoned Fort Michilimackinac in northern Michigan. The occupation lasted for several months and was part of a larger protest movement calling for greater recognition of indigenous rights. The activists were eventually forced to leave the fort by the National Guard, but their actions helped draw attention to Native American issues in Michigan and throughout the country.
