1. On November 30, 1942, a devastating fire destroyed the campus of the historic Elizabeth City State Teachers College in North Carolina. The fire was reportedly caused by faulty wiring and resulted in the loss of several buildings and important records. However, the college was rebuilt and reopened within just a few years.

2. In 1782, the state of North Carolina granted a charter to the University of North Carolina, making it the first public university in the United States. The university's first classes were held in January of 1795, several years after the charter was granted.
