1. In 1956, the first toll road in New Jersey, the Garden State Parkway, opened to the public. The parkway stretches 172 miles and runs from Cape May to the New York border.

2. On November 4, 1783, the last British troops left New York City, officially ending the American Revolutionary War. However, British soldiers still held New York City until November 25, 1783.

3. In 1922, the tallest lighthouse in the United States, the Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was lit for the first time. The lighthouse stands at 171 feet tall and has been guiding mariners for almost 100 years.

4. On November 4, 1997, the New Jersey Devils played their first game in their new arena, the Continental Airlines Arena (now known as the Izod Center). The Devils won the game 2-1 against the Ottawa Senators.

5. In 2008, Barack Obama won New Jersey's presidential vote in the general election. Obama won 57% of the vote in the state, compared to John McCain's 42%.
