1) In 1889, North Dakota became the 39th state to join the United States. The state's capital is Bismarck and its largest city is Fargo.

3) In 1978, North Dakota held a statewide vote to determine whether the state should have a flag. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, and the current state flag featuring a bald eagle was adopted.

4) In 1986, a massive fire broke out at the Kopper's wood-treatment facility in Wahpeton, North Dakota. The fire burned for three days, causing significant damage to the town and releasing toxic chemicals into the air and water.
