1. In 1633, English colonists under the guidance of Leonard Calvert, the younger brother of Sir Cecil Calvert, established the first settlement of Maryland at what is now St. Mary's City.

4. On November 7, 1911, the Johns Hopkins University introduced a new system of academic credit based on the Carnegie Unit, which became the standard for measuring academic credit across the United States.
5. On November 7, 1942, the first battle of the Maryland Campaign during the American Civil War, also known as the Battle of Shepherdstown, took place along the Potomac River near Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory, but it allowed Union forces to cross the river and resume their pursuit of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army.
