1. In 1861, Nevada became the 36th state in the United States. The signing of the proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln officially declared the state's admission to the union.

2. November 7, 1900, marked an historic first flight in Nevada, as aviator Sam Cody piloted a 40-foot box kite that he had mounted with an engine and crude controls. The short flight opened up a whole new era of air travel for the state.

3. In 1911, the Nevada legislature passed a law legalizing boxing and regulating it as a sport. This law allowed the state to become a boxing mecca for years to come, notably attracting high-profile fights such as the 1951 bout between Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta.

4. In 1986, the landmark MGM Grand Hotel fire occurred in Las Vegas. The tragedy resulted in 87 deaths and more than 700 injuries, making it one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history.

5. On November 7, 2018, Democrat Steve Sisolak was elected as the first Democratic governor of Nevada in 20 years. His victory marked a shift in the state's political landscape, which had previously been dominated by Republicans.
