1. In 1886, the town of Tempe was incorporated in Arizona. Tempe was named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece and is home to Arizona State University.
2. In 1911, Arizona became the 48th state in the United States of America. Prior to becoming a state, Arizona had been a territory since 1863.
3. In 1938, the notorious outlaw known as "The Apache Kid" died in Morenci, Arizona. The Apache Kid, whose real name was Haskay-bay-nay-ntayl, had been a notorious figure during the Apache Wars of the late 1800s.
4. In 1954, the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory was founded. The laboratory is dedicated to the study of the solar system's planets, moons, and other small bodies.
5. In 1994, voters in Arizona approved a ballot measure that made English the official language of the state. The measure, known as Proposition 106, required state and local governments to conduct business in English and declared that citizens have no right to receive government services in any language other than English.
