1. In 1887, the first women's college in California, Mills College, was chartered. This college was founded by a group of powerful women, including Julia Morgan, who would go on to become the first licensed female architect in California.

2. In 1938, the University of California established the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla. This institution has since become one of the world's foremost centers for oceanic and environmental research.

3. In 1965, a major power outage struck the state of California, affecting more than 30 million residents. The outage was caused by a mistake made by a technician who was performing routine maintenance on a transmission line. The outage lasted for several hours and caused widespread chaos and confusion.

4. In 1990, California voters approved Proposition 140, a ballot measure that imposed term limits on the state legislature. This measure was intended to limit the power of career politicians and encourage new blood in the government.

5. In 2018, the deadliest wildfire in state history, known as the Camp Fire, broke out in Butte County. The fire claimed the lives of 85 people, destroyed more than 18,000 structures, and burned 153,000 acres of land. The cause of the fire was determined to be a faulty electrical transmission line.
